30 JULY 2018 VOGUE.COM``````GISELE STARS ON OUR JULY COVER, and it’s hard tobelieve that nineteen years ago to the month she did the samething for the very first time. Her life may have changed a lotin the intervening years: She’s now living in Boston, marriedto Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, and a mother to theirtwo children. Yet in another way, Gisele is exactly the samegorgeous, sunny girl who charmed us when we first met herall those years ago.Other models of her stature—Linda Evangelista, say—were fabulous chameleons, channeling a new character onevery shoot. Not so Gisele. Whether we’ve shot her in abikini or in haute couture, who you see is who you get. Inher own life, she has two default uniforms—the girl in thetee and jeans or the girl in the sexy evening dress—and shewears one much like the other. For such an enduring model, with all the attendant industry fascination, she’s remarkablyuninterested in being a creature of fashion.Much of this is due, as Gisele tells writer Rob Haskell, toher refusal to be defined by her career—or, indeed, her looks. She’s been too busy dedicating her life to her family—taking``````SAME AS SHE EVER WASTHE GISELE BÜNDCHEN OF 2018, IN A RALPHLAUREN COLLECTION DRESS (LEFT, PHOTOGRAPHEDBY INEZ AND VINOODH), AND 1999 (ABOVE,PHOTOGRAPHED BY STEVEN MEISEL).her kids to watch their father play or teachingthem to garden. “When you have privilege, youhave to work extra hard,” she says. “You wantto give to your children because you love them, but is that really what’s best for them?” She’salso passionate about environmental activism, and it’s her commitment to various eco-mindedcauses—planting trees in Kenya or a clean-water project in her hometown in Brazil—thatour cover story celebrates, given that this issueis dedicated to sustainability and to being moremindful and reflective about our choices in life. The urgency around environmental issues is all too real, yet itcan become quite overwhelming. Instead, Gisele’s story—andthose we tell of some of the other women in this issue—highlights how making small steps will, we hope, bring us toa moment of real change.Gisele was shot in Mexico by the duo of Inez VanLamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, and Inez joins a ter-rific roster of female talents who’ve contributed to thisissue, from photographers Annie Leibovitz, Zoe Ghertner,Jackie Nickerson, Alex Prager, and Ronan McKenzie tothe artist Ana Mercedes Hoyos. Given our political andcultural climate, it has never felt more important to cel-ebrate the many different ways they see our world—andthat’s worth sustaining, too.EternalSunshineLetter from the EditorFASHION EDITOR: TONNE GOODMAN.
