54 JULY 2018 VOGUE.COMInside Marmur Medical’s second outpost, located on a buttoned-up stretch of ParkAvenue, a neon sign announces mm 2 inglowing purple. It’s not the messagethat catches my eye but the medium. Lightis exactly why I’ve come to see dermatologistEllen Marmur, M.D., this afternoon. Eversince researchers at NASA demonstrated thebenefits of light-emitting diode therapy forwound repair, noninvasive treatments usingtargeted wavelengths have migrated from thefringes of medicine right into high-profiledoctors’ practices. I’m not here for an in-office experience, however. I’m here to pickup a prototype of Marmur’s home LEDdevice—the MMSphere, slated to launchthis fall pending FDA clearance. Picture afuturistic doughnut, about a foot in diameter, that can cycle through a rave-worthy rainbowof light. “If Apple met Dyson, that would bemy MMSphere,” says Marmur, 49.Marmur—accustomed to full-force la-sers and the downtime they require—wasinitially a skeptic about LED devices, but agrowing body of data about the beneits oflow-level light therapy inally converted her.Red light has been shown to increase col-lagen and tamp down inlammation, whileblue light targets the bacteria that causebreakouts. (Remember all those glowingacne masks that swept social media lastyear?) San Francisco dermatologist Kath-leen M. Welsh, M.D., routinely follows upmicroneedling sessions with red LED: “Pa-tients’ redness improves, and healing time isdecreased by a day.” According to MichaelR. Hamblin, Ph.D., a principal investigator-power (in watts) and measurable results. (That’s why thewhole-body red-light beds are catching buzz: Size mat-ters.) Still, he sees considerable potential in small-scaleproducts. “I can envisage the day when every householdwill have one or two LED devices to treat all sorts ofconditions,” he says, citing improved energy and bettersleep. He’s now working on a study, funded by the U.S.Department of Defense, that will compare the efects ofnear-infrared and blue light on cognitive performance.Back home with my device, I plug it in and ire up theaccompanying app (called MMSkincare)``````BEAUTYRainbow BrightThe latest dermatologist-backedinnovation: a multi-wavelength LEDdevice that lights up home skin care.
