alking through the
wintery Ashford
town centre with
my friend in
January, a bitter
chill ran through me.
‘Fancy a McDonald’s?’ my
friend asked.
‘Sure, let’s warm up,’ I nodded.
It was a freezing morning, at
almost -8 degrees.
Nearing the entrance, my eyes
halted on a homeless man.
Leaning against the doorway,
he was ghostly pale and shivering.
Barely able to hold himself up.
‘You OK?’ I asked.
‘Fine,’ he croaked, weakly.
Hesitantly, I turned away and
went inside.
Not long after, the man came in
and lay down at a table near ours.
I tried to listen to my friend, but
my attention drifted to the

homeless man.
‘Sorry, mind if I speak to
him?’ I asked her.
She nodded, and I
approached.
‘Can I sit with you?’ I asked.
He nodded, looking confused.
I asked his name and he told me it
was Darren.
‘How old are you?’ I enquired.
‘48,’ he muttered.
‘Really? You look about 78,’ I
paused, nervous of his reaction.
But he let out a quiet gruff laugh,
to my relief.
I learnt that he’d been homeless
for two years.
‘Tell me three bad things about
you,’ I said.
‘I smoke, drink and I can be
aggressive,’ he replied instantly.
I nodded, taking in his sickly
white skin.
