class stood shivering on
the games pitch,
awaiting our first
hockey lesson.
Aged seven, one by one we
were handed a battered, old
wooden stick.
But when it was my turn, a
metal tennis racket was passed
over to me.
‘Can’t I have a hockey stick?’ I

asked, confused.
‘We think you might be more
comfortable with this,’ the PE
teacher explained.
Standing at under 4ft, I’d been
diagnosed with achondroplasia
dwarfism at six months old, in 2001.
As a baby, my parents Jacqueline,
now 52, and Leon, 46, had taken me
to see the doctor.
