It was the summer after her
GCSEs, and Beth was studying
drama at college.
She’d aced her exams and got
her first summer job at KFC.
Me and her dad Ian, 54, were
proud of our three girls.
We raised them in a good home
and they had high achievements.
With pay day giving Beth
freedom and independence, she

all expenses – from her phone to
driving lessons.

Beth had always been the loud
and lively one.
When she was younger, she
would burst into any room and
make the whole place her audience.
At 17, she took off to Magaluf
for a summer job. She
worked behind the bars
and enjoyed every
minute of it.
But one day, I got
a tearful phone call.
‘Mum, I’m
gay,’ she wept.
‘Why are you
crying?’ I asked.
I’d always had
my suspicions,
but I’d never been
narrow-minded.
