Build a Time

Capsule

Celebrate the start of the

school year by immortalizing a

slice of your family’s life.

Gather Your Items
Decorate an airtight container,
like a large mason jar, and fill it
with objects that represent your
child’s favorite songs, movies,
and colors. Include a list of your
child’s goals for the school year
and a length of yarn or ribbon
equal to her height.

Store Safely
Hide your time capsule in a dry
place, like your closet. Don’t bury
it or keep it in a garage, where
moisture might lead to mildew.
Sketch a map of your house, with
X marking the location of the time
capsule. Keep the map secure
until it’s time for opening.

Add Special Messages
Ask family and friends to write
encouraging letters to your child
to include in the capsule, and
have your child write a letter
to her future self as well. Seal
the capsule and write on it in
permanent marker the “open on”
date—the last day of school.

Open^ on^ the^ last
day^ of^ school^ so
your^ child^ can
see^ how^ much
she has^ changed
during^ the^ year!
