MY WEEKEND

Frank Skinner

F

rank’s been part of the British comedy
landscape for decades, famed for
penning the Three Lions anthem and
his work with fellow comedian David
Baddiel. The 62 year old lives in London with
his partner Cath and young son Buzz.
‘I rarely go out on a Friday evening because
I have to get up early on a Saturday morning
to host my Absolute Radio show, so me and my
partner Cath watch telly until about 9.30pm and
then I go to bed. We always have a series we
get completely hooked on – at the moment it’s
The Thatcher Years. We never get a takeout
as Cath only really eats boiled vegetables
and I don’t think there’s a takeaway that
does that... And I don’t eat meat on
a Friday so I’ll be on the taramasalata.
I don’t drink, smoke or do drugs, but
I do wonder if I’m eating a borderline
unsafe amount of taramasalata.
‘On Saturday I get up and do the radio
show and then when the summer comes and
we can get on the lawn, we socialise. We had
15 people over last weekend, and we usually
get some small people in the mix so my son
Buzz isn’t just surrounded by people telling
him how big he’s got and asking how he’s
getting on at school because he’s been asked
10,000 times before and all he says is “good”.
‘Sometimes if we can get a babysitter
we’ll go to a weird gig in the evening. Cath and
I both like what some people would regard as
strange bands like My Bloody Valentine or Dead
Can Dance – we both like music that sounds
like someone building a shed.
‘I take Buzz to cricket practice for two hours
on a Sunday morning. There’s no Sunday roast,
though I might occasionally eat some packets of
sliced beef. Me and Cath haven’t eaten the same
meal more than 10 times in the 19 years we’ve
been together. She bought a pollution monitor and
discovered that when we put the gas cooker on
we go slightly post-Chernobyl in the living room,
so we eat a lot of cold cuts. Then I go to Mass in
the evening because I’m a good Catholic boy.’

Frank Skinner Live will run at Assembly George
Square in Edinburgh until August 18. Frank’s
new tour Showbiz runs from September 12 to
December 11. For tickets, visit frankskinnerlive.com.
