IF SOMEONE you know will be
unwrapping their fi rst camera this
Christmas, this workbook could be the
perfect accompaniment. Emma Davies
fi rmly believes that anyone who can read
can learn to use a DSLR or mirrorless
camera as long as they tackle everything in the right
order and practise.
This workbook accompanies Emma’s free year-long
remote-learning course and it takes you through key
aspects of photography such as exposure, aperture and
shutter speed as well as composition and light. Everything
is explained in simple terms and there are tests and
assignments throughout. By the time you’ve fi nished
this fi rst workbook you’ll be a competent photographer
and ready for workbook two, which covers different
genres of photography as well the basics of editing and
sharing images. ★★★★★ Angela Nicholson

NanGoldin: Sirens
Runs until 11 January 2020 at Marian
Goodman Gallery, London. Tuesday-Saturday
10am-6pm.
THIS major exhibition is the fi rst solo presentation of
Nan Goldin’s works in London since the Whitechapel
Art Gallery display in 2002. Presenting an important
range of historical works, there are also three new
video works which are being exhibited for the fi rst
time, including Sirens (2019), which the show is named
after. Over the past year, Goldin has been working on
a signifi cant new digital slideshow titled Memory Lost
(2019), which recounts a life lived through a lens of
drug addiction.
One of the most moving and poignant projects of
Goldin’s career to date, it is also accompanied by a
new score commissioned from composer and
instrumentalist Mica Levi. This is a show worth making
extra time for if you can. Amy Davies
