BEHIND THE SEAMS

When cutting strip-pieced units
into smaller segments, I cut
from the reverse side. It’s easier
for me to see the seam lines
for lining up the ruler, and any
pressing inaccuracies do not
cause problems.

BEAT THE BULK

When machine-quilting
for others, I occasionally
come across a quilt
where the intersections
are bulky and diffi cult
to quilt around without
the foot getting stuck or
causing bumpy stitches.
In those cases, I cover
the seam with a thick
terry towel and pound
the intersection fl at
with a hammer.

Why didn’t I think of that?

TIPS FROM OUR READERS

To stay organized,
I purchase TWO
PLANNERS every
year and designate
one for quilt events
only. I put quilt
meetings, shows,
exhibits, retreats, and
other related activities
on the calendar,
and clip brochures,
reservation
confi rmations, and
other pertinent
information to the
pages.

I use an inexpensive OVER-THE-DOOR SHOE ORGANIZER
that has clear pockets to contain hard-to-store quilt
accessories like a mini iron, spray adhesives, extension
cords, and small templates. I can see at a glance what I have
on hand, and clutter is kept to a minimum.
DEB HAAN, Abbotsford, British Columbia

SPONSORED TIP

To get smooth and fl uid
stippling, use gentle pressure
on the foot pedal and slowly
increase the speed. Allow the
needle to start stitching in
place before you move the
quilt with your hands.
