American Patchwork & Quilting - USA (2020-02)

(Antfer) #1

4

Gather four 12^1 ∕ 2 "-long strips in
one color. Repeat Step 3 to frame
center unit.

5

Continue adding strips in the
same manner until there is at least
91 ∕ 2 " on each side of inner Four-Patch
unit to make a framed center unit.

6

Place framed center unit under
ruler. Determine how wide the
four solid gray strips in the last round
need to be to produce an unfinished
12"-square block. Do not center the
inner Four-Patch unit when measuring.
Select (or cut) solid gray 12^1 ∕ 2 "-long
strips according to your determined
width. Add strips to framed center unit.
Trim unit to 12" square including seam
allowances to make a block.

7

Repeat steps 1–6 to make 16
improvisational blocks total.

Quilt tester Jan Ragaller made
Playtime in barnyard-theme prints
for a lighthearted look. “I had not
done much improvisational piecing
before this project,” Jan says.
“I found the process to be quite
liberating.”
