Q

WHAT IS YOUR

FAVORITE

DESIGN OR

MOTIF TO QUILT?

When in doubt, I quilt
feathers, whether the
design is modern or
traditional. A feathers
motif is the little black
dress in my design library.

Hook and swirl is my
go-to design. I really love
combining traditional with
modern designs.

Q

WHEN DID

YOU DECIDE

TO DO

LONG-ARM

QUILTING

FOR

OTHERS?

A

I went to a quilt show in September 2010 to shop for a
sewing machine I could take on retreats. I spotted a long-
arm machine, and it was love at first sight! I knew then that I
wanted to quilt for others and build a business. I started my
journey as a long-arm quilter in January 2011. I thought it would
be a great way to work while raising my family.

The owner of my local quilt shop offered to train me to
use her long-arm machine to finish her shop samples. I
knew within a matter of hours of starting the training that I had to
get a long-arm machine for my home. That was seven years ago.
Quilting for others opened up an opportunity to work from home
and set my own hours.

WHAT IF SOMEONE

SAYS, “QUILT WHATEVER

YOU WANT”?

A

I share the price differences, starting with edge-
to-edge quilting and moving through the various
custom-quilting levels. After that, we usually can decide
what will work best within their budget parameters.

I love the creative freedom of “do whatever you
want,” but I’ve learned to ask if they have specific
likes or dislikes. Feathers, for example, can be polarizing.
I try to determine if we have a consensus about what
terms like meander, matchstick, and in the ditch mean.

I ask quiltmakers to look through my three-ring
binder of quilting designs. Often they find something
that matches their top but hadn’t thought of on their own.
