CUT FABRICS

Cut pieces in the following order.

Designer Andy Knowlton prefers

to make triangle-squares larger than

necessary and trim them to size. To use

this method, cut 4" squares instead of

the 3^7 ⁄ 8 " listed in cutting instructions.

You will make three blocks from

each solid color for 21 total. Set one

block aside for a future project.

From each of seven solid colors, cut:

▫ 6—3^7 ⁄ 8 " squares

▫ 24—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares

From solid white, cut:

▫ 42—3^7 ⁄ 8 " squares

▫ 168—3^1 ⁄ 2 ×4" rectangles

▫ 84—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares

▫ 21—1^1 ⁄ 2 " squares

From solid gray, cut:

▫ 7—3×42" strips for border

▫ 6—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" strips for sashing

▫ 15—2^1 ⁄ 2 × 13 1 ⁄ 2 " sashing rectangles

▫ 168—2" squares

▫ 84—1^1 ⁄ 2 × 3 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles

From solid green, cut:

▫ 8—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips

ASSEMBLE BLOCKS

Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam

allowances. Sew with right sides

together unless otherwise stated.

Press seams in directions indicated

by arrows on diagrams. If no direction

is specified, press seam toward darker

fabric.

Gather two 3^7 ⁄ 8 " squares and eight

3 1 ⁄ 2 " squares from one solid color,

two solid white 3^7 ⁄ 8 " squares, four solid

white 3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares, eight solid white

3 1 ⁄ 2 ×4" rectangles, one solid white 1^1 ⁄ 2 "

square, eight solid gray 2" squares and

four solid gray 1^1 ⁄ 2 × 3 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles.

Use a pencil to mark a diagonal

line on one side of each solid

color 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square, each solid white 3^7 ⁄ 8 "

square, and each solid gray 2" square.

Align a marked solid color 3^1 ⁄ 2 "

square with left-hand edge

of a solid white 3^1 ⁄ 2 ×4" rectangle

(Diagram 1; note direction of marked

line). Sew on marked line. Trim excess

fabric, leaving a^1 ⁄ 4 " seam allowance.

Press open attached triangle. Add

a marked solid gray 2" square to

opposite corner of rectangle, again

noting direction of marked line, to

make a left-hand rectangle unit. The

unit still should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 ×4" including

seam allowances. Repeat to make four

left-hand rectangle units total.

Referring to Diagram 2 for

placement of marked squares,

repeat Step 3 to make four right-hand

rectangle units.

Referring to Diagram 3, sew

together left-hand and right-hand

rectangle units to make a side unit.

Repeat to make four side units total.
