out solid white 3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares,
side units, and center unit in three
rows. Sew together pieces in rows.
Join rows to make a block. The block
should be 13^1 ⁄ 2 " square including seam
allowances.

ASSEMBLE QUILT TOP

Piece and cut solid gray 2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42"

strips to make:

▫ 4—2^1 ⁄ 2 × 58 1 ⁄ 2 " sashing strips

Diagram, lay out 20 blocks, solid

gray 2^1 ⁄ 2 × 13 1 ⁄ 2 " sashing rectangles, and

solid gray 2^1 ⁄ 2 × 58 1 ⁄ 2 " sashing strips in

nine rows.

Sew together pieces in block

rows. Press seams toward sashing

rectangles. Join block rows and sashing

strips to make quilt center. Press seams

toward sashing strips. The quilt center

should be 58^1 ⁄ 2 × 73 1 ⁄ 2 " including seam

allowances.

Piece and cut solid gray 3×42"

strips to make:

▫ 2—3× 73 1 ⁄ 2 " border strips

▫ 2—3× 63 1 ⁄ 2 " border strips

Sew long border strips to long

edges of quilt center. Add short

border strips to remaining edges to

complete quilt top. Press all seams

toward border.

To give this smaller version of Solid Choice

a more traditional feel, 19th-century

reproduction prints were used in lieu of solid

colors. In particular, dark brown replaced gray

for the center crosses and sashing.
