EVERYTHING OLD IS
new again
- Build your stash of vintage
fabrics with yardages, scraps,
and antique quilt blocks. Don’t
forget the neutrals! - Sort scraps that are 1" or
larger in clear plastic bags
according to color. - Hand-wash fabrics before use
to remove dirt and loose dyes.
Many old dyes will bleed. - Once washed, check for
stains. Sometimes it is easier
to see stains from the back of
a fabric. Make a plan to work
around them.
5. Sometimes an antique fabric
looks fine but a little stress
reveals fabric weakness. Black
dyes are especially susceptible
to degradation. Check the
soundness of a fabric by tugging
sharply with and across the
grain. It is better to find out
now rather than after a quilt is
finished.
6. When pressing before cutting,
use spray starch to add some
stiffness to the fabric.
7. Scrappy designs like
Something Old & Something
New lend themselves to working
with small pieces of antique
fabrics.
