Referring to Diagram 3, lay out
solid black 3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares and large
hourglass units in three rows. Sew
together pieces in rows. Join rows to
make Block A. The block should be 9^1 ⁄ 2 "
square including seam allowances.

Repeat steps 1–5 to make 41 A
blocks total.

ASSEMBLE CENTER UNITS

Mark a diagonal line on wrong side
of each solid white 2^1 ⁄ 4 " square.

Referring to Assemble A Blocks,
steps 3 and 4, pages 84 and 86,
use marked solid white squares and
solid black 2^1 ⁄ 4 " squares to make 68
small hourglass units (Diagram 4).
Each unit should be 1^1 ⁄ 2 " square
including seam allowances.

Lay out four solid white 1^1 ⁄ 2 "
squares, four small hourglass
units, and one solid black 1^1 ⁄ 2 " square in
three rows (Diagram 5). Sew together
pieces in rows. Join rows to make a
center unit. The unit should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 "
square including seam allowances.
Repeat to make 17 center units total.

ASSEMBLE B BLOCKS

For one B block, gather a pair
of matching batik 4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares,
one solid black 4^1 ⁄ 4 " square, one solid
white 4^1 ⁄ 4 " square, four solid black 3^1 ⁄ 2 "
squares, and one center unit.

Mark a diagonal line on wrong
side of each assorted batik 4^1 ⁄ 4 "
square.

Referring to Assemble A Blocks,
Step 3, page 84, use the marked
batik squares, solid black 4^1 ⁄ 4 " square,
and solid white 4^1 ⁄ 4 " square to make
two black triangle-squares and two
white triangle-squares (Diagram 6).
