CUT FABRICS


Cut pieces in the following order.
This list is based on the quilt
shown. Your improvisational piecing
may increase or decrease the number
of pieces and fabric amounts needed.
Vary the widths of the strips to
increase the impact of the design.

From solid blue, cut:
▫ 24—3" squares
From solid orange, cut:
▫ 9—3" squares
▫ 20—12^1 ⁄ 2 "-long strips that are
1" to 2" wide
From solid yellow, cut:
▫ 9—3" squares
▫ 24—12^1 ⁄ 2 "-long strips that are
1" to 2" wide
From solid green, cut:
▫ 12—3" squares
▫ 12—12^1 ⁄ 2 "-long strips that are
1" to 2" wide
From solid aqua, cut:
▫ 24—12^1 ⁄ 2 "-long strips that are
1" to 2" wide
From solid lime, cut:
▫ 20—12^1 ⁄ 2 "-long strips that are
1" to 2" wide
From solid red, cut:
▫ 6—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips
▫ 10—3" squares
▫ 9—1^1 ⁄ 2 " sashing squares

From solid gray, cut:
▫ 84—12^1 ⁄ 2 "-long strips that are
1" to 2" wide
▫ 64—7"-long strips that are
1" to 3" wide
▫ 24—1^1 ⁄ 2 ×12" sashing rectangles

ASSEMBLE BLOCKS
Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward darker
fabric.
The following instructions are for
basic improvisational piecing. Each
block pieced using this technique
will be different. For inspiration and
examples, see the full quilt photo on
page 96.

Referring to Diagram 1, sew
together two nonmatching solid
3" squares to make a pair. Repeat to
make a second pair. Join pairs to make
a Four-Patch unit.

FINISHED QUILT: 491 ⁄ 2 " square
FINISHED BLOCK: 111 ⁄ 2 " square

MATERIALS


Yardages and cutting instructions
are based on 42" of usable fabric
width. You may need more or
less fabric, depending on your
improvisational piecing.

▫ 1 ⁄ 4 yard solid blue (blocks)
▫ 1 ⁄ 2 yard each solid orange, solid
yellow, solid green, solid aqua,
and solid lime (blocks)
▫ 5 ⁄ 8 yard solid red (blocks,
sashing squares, binding)
▫ 23 ⁄ 4 yards solid gray (blocks,
sashing rectangles)
▫ 31 ⁄ 4 yards backing fabric
▫ 58"-square batting
▫ Acrylic ruler

Experiment
with scraps
before
beginning
the project
to get a feel
for improv
piecing.
There is no
right—or
wrong—way
to do it.
