Using an acrylic ruler, rotary
cutter, and cutting mat, trim
the Four-Patch unit at an angle
(Diagram 2).
▪ Place Four-Patch unit under ruler
with one unit edge extending
beyond ruler side edge at an
angle (a). Trim first edge.

▪ Rotate unit 180°. Line up trimmed
edge with a line on the ruler (b).
Trim second edge.
▪ Rotate unit 90° clockwise. Line up
first trimmed edge with ruler top
edge (c). Trim third edge.

▪ Rotate unit 180°. Extend
untrimmed edge past ruler side
edge (d). Decide if you want unit
to be square or rectangular. Trim
fourth edge accordingly to make
a trimmed Four-Patch unit.

four block layouts
used in the quilt.
From left to right:
Some blocks feature
incomplete frames
that were fi lled in
with a second bright
color or with gray. The
most common blocks
have two gray frames
sandwiching one
bright color frame.
Other blocks have two
bright color frames
next to each other.
And some blocks
alternate gray and
bright color frames.
