PRINCE OF WALES IN NOVA SCOTIA

WELCOME AT HALIFAX

From W.T. Massey. Halifax (Nova Scotia), Sunday.
During the pleasant voyage from Saint John, New Brunswick, to Halifax, the cruisers Dragon and
Dauntless, passing over the fishing grounds, where they dropped depth charges, lowered boats and
picked up sufficient cod stunned by the explosions for every mess in the ships. The Dragon led the way
into Halifax in beautiful weather at ten o’clock in the morning, and was given an international salute
of guns from the citadel, the Italian dreadnought Conte Di Cavour, and the French warship Ville d’Ys.
The latter was built in Canada, and was used during the war as a “mystery ship”, and is the patroller of
the French fishing area.
The captains, when the Royal Standard had been transferred to the Renown, were received by
the Prince, who afterwards visited the foreign warships. The reception accorded him in the
Italian battleship was most enthusiastic. The crew paraded and marched past the Prince on the
quarterdeck, carrying flags. When his Royal Highness was piped over the side the sailors
swarmed the gun turrets and superstructure, cheering tumultuously. The Italian Consul-Gen-
eral participated in the welcome.
Many returned Canadian soldiers landed from the Caronia during the morning and stayed in Halifax
to witness the Prince’s arrival. General Currie, owing to the date fixed for his official reception at Ottawa
as Canadian Army Commander, had to leave for the capital earlier. Sir Robert Borden, who sailed in
the Dauntless, was invited by the Prince to the Renown as his guest on arrival at Halifax. The Premier
will remain in the battlecruiser until the official landing at Quebec, accompanying the Prince to Char-
lottetown, Prince Edward Island, and up the St. Lawrence.
The Halifax programme had arranged for the Prince an official reception on Monday, but his
Royal Highness went ashore this afternoon in civilian clothes and strolled through the beauti-
ful Point Pleasant Park, to the head of West Arm, and round the citadel to the dockyard. Each
Province is anxious that the Royal visitor shall see, not merely the great industries which are
building up the Dominion’s prosperity, but the local features peculiar to the district. Halifax,
which claims to be the most British of all Canadian towns, is showing its magnificent harbour
to the best advantage, and the public gardens are at their best, though the town still bears sad
scars of the wreckage caused by the calamitous explosion of the munition ship Mont Blanc in
December, 1917. There is a bright side to that black picture, for with the end of the war the work-
ers, formerly employed in munitions rebuilding the stricken area and progressing with all the
energy of a forceful people, can put into the work. New and well-arranged residences are replac-
ing the old-fashioned and less-comfortable dwellings, and it will not be long before the people
living in hurriedly erected war buildings put up after the disaster will be housed in the rebuilt
quarter.

POPULAR RESORTS

At midday the Prince drove through the wrecked district, and saw what remains of the explosion,
which killed 1,200 citizens. He inspected the newly planned area. During the morning he visited two
clubs of whose hospitality officers who have done duty on this naval station have pleasant recollections.
One of these the Waegwoltic Club, on the North-West Arm, is the centre of Halifax outdoor amuse-
ments, and an ideal spot for busy city men’s recreation. Standing on a delightful green slope, backed
by a semicircle of trees, the club faces a broad sheet of salt water, with bold hills on the other side,
richly clothed with woods, now in their summer glory. On holidays all Halifax turns to this lovely spot,
where hundreds of bright canoes, boats and motor launches are propelled over the dancing waters.
There are concerts ashore, swimming parties and other rational healthy amusements amid surround-
ings of transcending beauty. The Prince lunched at the club. People, wishing that the Royal visitor
should see their resort at its best, flocked from the heart of the city, where they had witnessed his Royal
Highness’s progress, and took to all sorts of craft, and made a scene of gaiety and rare animation.
On leaving the club the Prince went to the Studley Quoit Club, probably the most antique insti-
tution of its kind in the world. For sixty-nine years the club, which is known all over Canada
and the States, has carried on without a clubhouse building of any kind, and its rules, regula-
tions and procedure are the same today as at the inauguration. True, it now possesses a tele-
phone, which hangs on one of the fine trees bordering the playing area, but this is the only
change. The club flies a White Ensign presented many years since by the Navy, and has a naval
grog tub as almost its sole piece of furniture. The members at the conclusion of play sit round
a camp fire kindled in the wood on the same old spot, and men whose business methods are as
up-to-date as any in the world meet just as their grandfathers did. The Prince signed the visi-
tors’ book, which bears the name of the King and of some of the most distinguished men of the
present and past generations.

BALMORAL CASTLE
August 18th
Divine Service was held in Crathie

The Reverend Neil Glover
preached the Sermon.
