BUSINESS BULLETIN

Estate agent ‘is

takeover target’
Countrywide, the owner of
estate agent chains
Hamptons and Bairstow
Eves, is being sized up for a
bid by a mystery suitor,
according to a Mail on
Sunday report.
The company floated on
a valuation of £750m six
years ago but has slumped
to a market capitalisation of
only £77m amid a tough
property market.
Countrywide was
previously owned by the
private equity giant
Apollo before falling into
the hands of its lenders in
the wake of the credit
crunch. The company, led
by executive chairman Peter
Long, made no comment.

Wealth manager

seeks merger
Tilney is in talks to merge
with rival Smith &
Williamson, in a deal that
would create one of Britain’s
biggest wealth managers
with £45bn under
management.
The talks, first reported
by The Sunday Times, come
after Smith & Williamson
abandoned an attempt to
combine with Rathbone
Brothers, another
competitor.
Tilney is controlled by the
private equity firm Permira,
while Smith & Williamson is
mainly owned by its senior
management, who following
the collapse of discussions
with Rathbone Brothers also
explored a float.

BHP’s full-year

results to reveal

the impact of

global slowdown

LAST week was rocky for
global markets. Rising
tension in Hong Kong, a
continued war of words
between the US and China,
weak German GDP data and
the temporary appearance
of a key recession indicator

  • a flipped yield curve on
    2yr/10yr bonds – combined
    to send equities tumbling.
    This month has defied
    August’s reputation for
    quietness so far, but major
    corporate news is still fairly
    thin on the ground.

Tomorrow

There’s a mixed picture for
mining heavyweight BHP as
it prepares to reveal its
full-year results. Its share
price has done well over the
past year and a falling
pound has increased the
value of its global
operations. The price of
iron ore is being hurt by
trade war fears, however,
putting pressure on its
shares. It is also trying to see
off US activist Elliott
Investments.

An appearance by Federal
Reserve chairman Jerome
Powell at the Kansas City
Fed’s annual Jackson Hole
economic symposium will
be a key opportunity for
further insight.
“Historically, this has been
used to signal shifts in the
Fed’s thinking,” said
Investec’s Victoria Clarke.
“But this year may well take
on additional importance
given that it is likely to be
Jerome Powell’s first public
comments since the latest
round of tariffs were
announced.”

Economic week ahead

How serious is the global
slump sapping the life
from industry and
potentially the wider
economy?
We get a first glimpse
on Thursday with IHS
Markit’s PMIs, the surveys
of businesses. Analysts
expect a modest further
slowdown in the eurozone
and the US in August.
Tomorrow’s
manufacturing numbers
from the CBI will indicate
whether or not the UK has
managed any form of
rebound from its
contraction in the second
quarter of the year.
The effect of this

slowdown on the public
finances will be revealed
on Wednesday.
Analysts anticipate a
budget surplus of £3.7bn
for July, bigger than the
£2.7bn in the same month
a year earlier.
July is typically a big
month for tax receipts, so
it does not mean the
deficit has been abolished
for the entire year,
however.
Thursday’s migration
numbers for the opening
months of the year will
show if the approach of
Brexit made a difference
to those moving to and
from the UK.
