SAM TURNER

FRANKIE DETTORI’S

stellar season
continued yesterday
when he bagged yet
another Group One win,
courtesy of Coronet in
the Darley Prix Jean
Romanet at Deauville.
Coronet’s success
provided Dettori with an
incredible 13th Group
One victory in the last 78
days in what has been a
golden period for the
48-year-old Italian
jockey.
The British raiders
suffered a rare Gallic
reverse in the Darley
Prix Morny when the
unbeaten Earthlight
ended an eight-year
drought for the home
contingent with a gritty
success for French
trainer Andre Fabre.

DINA HAS GOT THE

WORLD AT HER FEET

T

HE bad news
remains that
Dina Asher-
Smith cannot
quite beat
Shaunae Miller-Uibo
over 200 metres.
The good news, it emerged
yesterday after another nar-
row defeat, is that the Baha-
mian will not contest the event
at the World Championships.
The timetable prevents
Miller-Uibo from doubling up
in Doha in the 400m, where
she is the Olympic champion,
and 200m, where she is
unbeaten for two years.
For Asher-Smith, it is a
golden stroke of fortune that
one of her biggest rivals will
not be in her bracket in Qatar
in October.
The scale of Miller-Uibo’s
talent was laid out once again
at the Muller Grand Prix in
Birmingham where, against a
field featuring all of the world’s

best except Elaine Thompson,
she won in 22.24sec.
Asher-Smith, who led com-
ing off the bend, was second
in 22.36, beating, among oth-
ers, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce,
the Jamaican winner of two
Olympic 100m gold medals, in
third, and fourth-placed
Dafne Schippers, twice the
world champion at 200m.
It was after the fascinating
race that Miller-Uibo revealed
she would not be racing the
event in Doha, where the
200m final and 400m semi-
final will be roughly an hour
apart on the same night.
She installed Asher-Smith
as the favourite in her
absence, ahead of Jamaica’s
Thompson, the Olympic
champion at 100m and 200m

and the fastest woman in the
world in 2019 at 200m.
Miller-Uibo, who has not
lost to Asher-Smith in the
200m since 2015, said: ‘I think
it’s going to be her time right
here. I’m really excited for
her. She’s definitely stepping
it up.’
Asher-Smith, typically, is
more reserved about her
chances, despite following her
three European golds last
year with excellent form this
season. She holds strong
medal potential for the 100m
at the worlds — she has gone
under 11 seconds in all four of
her races — and at this longer
distance has two victories
and two podium places,
including this, from four
Diamond League meetings.
‘This was like an Olympic or
world final, so it would have
been a silver,’ Asher-Smith
said yesterday. ‘It was fantas-
tic to be able to run against
this class at home.’
The 23-year-old will only run

the 100m at next weekend’s
national championships.
‘I ran well here, great, but
where does that put me for
the World Champs?
‘It doesn’t really mean any-
thing with the greatest
respect, because at the end of
the day it is what happens in
the three rounds in Qatar
that matters and you have
Olympic champions, Elaine
to come, reigning world cham-
pion twice over in Dafne, so
you have to wait and see.’
Katarina Johnson-Thomp-
son, another British medal
hope for Doha, produced her
best long jump since 2015 in
going to 6.85 metres. While
that was impressive, her hep-
tathlon rival, the Olympic
champion Nafi Thiam, added
a massive 19cm to her per-
sonal best in winning with
6.86m.
Adam Gemili took second
place in the men’s 100m, in
10.07sec, losing only on a
photo finish to Yohan Blake.
