Tech alerts to

tackle sepsis

DOCTORS are using
digital alerts to spot deadly
sepsis in patients, saving
hundreds of lives.
The technology moni-
tors vital signs and notifies
doctors if it detects the
blood poisoning condition
or signs of deterioration.
There are plans to roll
out the system after the
number of deaths fell
during a pilot in Liverpool,
Cambridge and Berkshire.
Royal Liverpool and
Broadgreen NHS trust,
where 200 lives a year were
saved, said: “We have seen
a major impact.”

Medals given

80 years on

A DUNKIRK veteran has
been presented with his
war medals for his 100th
birthday – 79 years after
the famous evacuation.
Doug Jones did not
apply for the honours after
the conflict because he did
not want to glorify the
horrors he had seen.
But eight decades later
he had a change of heart
and his son presented
them at a family party.
Doug, of Bolton, said: “It
was a lovely day. I didn’t
know I was so popular. I
had a grand time.”

ISLAMIC State has
claimed responsibility for
a double bombing at a
wedding in Afghanistan
which killed 63 people.
IS said a fighter blew
himself up at the packed
ceremony in Kabul before
an explosives-laden vehicle
was ignited when emer-
gency services arrived.
President Ashraf Ghani
has condemned Saturday’s
attack as “barbaric”.
The groom, named
Mirwais, said: “I will never
see happiness again.”

well-wishers have donated almost
£60,000 in less than 24 hours to support
the policeman’s family and widow, Lissie.
They had tied the knot four weeks ago
in a “dream wedding”. He was reportedly
due to go on his honeymoon within days.
Earlier this week PC Harper’s father
said the family were “devastated” by his
death, adding: “We’re in a bad place.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has
called the incident a “mindless and
brutal” crime, saying he was “shocked
and appalled” by the attack.
While Home Secretary Priti Patel said
she had “instructed the Home Office to
urgently explore what we can do to
better support the families of our brave
police officers who are seriously injured
or worse by cowardly criminals”.

Another message on dozens of flowers

young soul” PC

Thames Valley Police

constable before
becoming a police
officer a year later.
It read: “Such a
shocking, mindless,
horrific act of
brutality. This has been impossible for
us to get our heads around. A brave man
protecting us all and just doing his job.”
Other grieving colleagues left tributes
to one of “Thames Valley’s finest”. And

They were all arrested at a local

He is thought to
have been responding
to a reported burglary

A quad bike is said

THE heartbroken family of PC
Andrew Harper have said they will
“never recover” from his murder as
police continue to quiz 10 suspects.
The newlywed’s mum revealed her

Travel insurers hit with medical bills of £209million

TRAVEL insurers are dealing with a
new medical claim every three
minutes, figures reveal.
Some 153,000 travellers needed
emergency medical treatment
abroad last year, the Association of
British Insurers said. The insurers’

medical bill of £209million was the
highest since 2010. It accounted for
52% of the £399million paid out for
all claims, with cancellation costs
making up 36% of the total and lost
baggage or money 4%.
And a fifth of holidaymakers still

travel without insurance, despite
the average policy costing £38.
Air ambulance costs to the UK
can be as much as £75,000 from
Asia or £50,000 from the US.
Payouts included £200,000 to a
cruise passenger who suffered a

brain haemorrhage in China, and
£153,000 for a broken arm caused
by falling out of bed in the USA.
The ABI said: “If we leave the EU
