Liverpool have now won 11
consecutive Premier League
matches, equalling their best-ever
winning streak in the competition,
previously set between February
and April 2014 under manager
Brendan Rodgers.
Southampton have now lost each
of their last five league games
against Liverpool by an aggregate
score of 13-2.
Liverpool have won their first two
league games to a season in back-
to-back campaigns for only the
second time in the Premier League
era, having previously done so in
1993-94 and 1994-95.
Southampton have lost both of
their first two Premier League
games of a season for the first
time since their first season back
in the division in 2012-13 under
Nigel Adkins.

the defensive duties

“I’m glad we did that as
a team.
“On a personal level,
it’s nice for me. It has
been a while since I
started, but I’m delighted
that I could help
contribute to the team
because that’s what I’ve
missed so much. It was
really nice to be back out
there.”
Liverpool did not
make a major signing
this summer, but Oxlade-
Chamberlain’s return adds
depth to the squad.
“It is really good for us
to have him back,” said
Georginio Wijnaldum. “He
is a good quality player
and he showed that before
he got injured. As he
showed two seasons ago
he is fast, he can do
crosses and score goals.
“It is important for him
and good if you have
quality players and we
just have to make sure we
can rotate during the
season as we all have so
many games and we have
a big squad.”

NIGHTMARE^
Adrian makes a big
hash of clearing the
ball and Ings scores

ADRIAN’S reaction to his Southampton blunder will be
more important than gifting Danny Ings a late goal,
according to Georginio Wijnaldum.
The penalty shoot-out hero of Istanbul in midweek
turned villain at St Mary’s on Saturday as his attempt at
a short pass handed Saints a late lifeline in only his
second Liverpool start.
Defender Andy Robertson
described the goal as “daft” – and it
could have been costly but for a
late miss from former Reds striker
Ings that should have hauled
Saints level.
But Dutch midfielder Wijnaldnum
said: “Those kind of things can
happen with a goalkeeper. Last season
it happened to Alisson against
Leicester City. And in a pre-season
friendly.
“How is he going to react to the
mistake? I think that is more
important than the mistake itself.
Everyone can make a mistake.
“The tough thing for him is that,
when a keeper makes a mistake, a lot of times it will
result in a goal.”
And Wijnaldum said Adrian (above) has been thrown in
at the deep end so soon after arriving at
Anfield. “Everyone needs time to
adjust,” he said. “It would have been
much easier for him if he had come in
from the start, with Simon Mignolet leaving
and him coming in.”
