CHRIS MAGUIRE wants
Sunderland to ensure the only
scaredy cats at the Stadium of
Light are the opposition.
As owner Stewart Donald
revealed he is “close” to securing
fresh investment in the club and
“two or three” more signings may
arrive before the transfer
deadline, the Black Cats won their
first league game of the season.
Too many draws cost Jack
Ross’s side automatic promotion
last term before they lost to
Charlton in the play-off final.
And Sunderland began the new
season with 1-1 draws against
Oxford and Ipswich.

    demanding a
    fortress
    mentality.
    Maguire, whose
    goal separated the sides when
    Sunderland beat Portsmouth
over two legs in last season’s
    play-off semi-final, opened his
    account for the new term.
He said: “We want to turn this
into a place where teams are
scared to play. The fans get on
our side and you can hear the
    noise and atmosphere – it’s
    brilliant. They love people
    working and putting bodies on
the line like Grant and others do.”
    Maguire netted from close
    range after Jordan Willis levelled
    Marcus Harness’ opener. Harness,
who scored his first goal since
moving from Burton, said: “It’s a
    great personal milestone, but I’m
    gutted about the result.”

boss Lee Bullen reckons the
free transfer from Cardiff will
cause havoc in the Champi-
onship this season.
He said: “Kadeem is playing
with a massive smile on his
face. I think he is enjoying the
role we have given him.
“We are asking him to stay
as wide as possible to try to
free himself from so he can
get at full-backs one-on-one.
“The lad Romeo is no
slouch. He is a good defender
one v one and Kadeem has
given him a really tough time
today.
“If he continues playing the
way he has been playing, he is
going to cause havoc against
many, many full-backs.”

like as a player as I have been
watching him for a while.
“My job was just to try to
make it as difficult for him as
possible. I knew he was going
to stay out wide and get on
the ball.
“He was going to
have chances to
take me on one v
one so I had to
make it as difficult
as possible.
“Did I win that
battle? We won the
game, so yeah.”
Both managers viewed
Romeo’s head-to-head with
left-winger Harris as one of
the key tussles in the game.
While Harris could not stop
Wednesday falling to a first
defeat of the season, caretaker

focus was on restricting the
Owls’ in-form winger Kadeem
Harris and delivering a sec-
ond home win of the season.
Right-back Romeo said:
“We were all raring to go at
half-time. We were ready
for the challenge, we
invited it, we were
hungry for it and
we were hungry to
hang on to the
lead.
“Jed had been
sent off, whether it
was a red or not we
needed to get him out of the
s*** and that is what we did.
“I’ve said in the past our
analysis leaves no stone un-
turned so I knew what I was
coming up against.

Matt Smith headed in their
37th-minute winner from a
Connor Mahoney corner.
Romeo admitted he did not
see the incident where
Wallace was ruled to have
caught Sheffield Wednesday

studs-up challenge. His only
