atherine Ryan grew up in Canada, but
it was only when she moved to Britain
over a decade ago that she finally felt
at home. She loves life in the UK and is keen
to prove to her daughter Violet that she has
English roots, but the stand-up comic learnt
a lot more than she bargained for when she
researched her family tree for BBC1’s Who
Do You Think You Are?
‘My daughter is English and very proud of
it,’ says Katherine. ‘She speaks the Queen’s
English and is always apologising for me,
saying, “I’m sorry about my mother, she’s
Canadian.” So it’d be amazing if I discovered
I was descended from English nobility!’
Katherine knows lots about her father’s
relatives, who come from Ireland, but she
soon finds that her Canadian roots go
deeper than she thought, with her mother’s
ancestors owning a cod-packing business on
the coast of Newfoundland during the 1800s.
Pioneer spirit
‘I thought the trail would lead back to Britain
after a couple of generations,’ she explains.
‘I’ve been quite rude about Canada in some
of my stand-up, but I think I need to start
being careful about what I say. My ancestors
worked really hard in very tough conditions
to make a life for themselves, which makes
me feel more
connected to
Canada than
ever before.’
However,
trawling back
to the late 1700s, Katherine finally manages
to trace her maternal line to England and
to Nicholas Cobb, a pub landlord from the
picturesque Dorset village of Corfe Castle,
who was thrown in jail for speaking
‘scurrilous words’ against a local magistrate!
‘I like the sound of Nicholas Cobb,’ says
Katherine. ‘He came from Corfe Castle and
I think my daughter will be impressed by
that. I won’t tell her it’s the name of a village
and that he actually lived in a pub!’ ■
