Whip up a batch of
woodland treats
Create treats that double as decor, like
these woodland cupcakes made by
Dainya Brooks (GlitterAndGraze.com).
To make her “mushroom” cupcakes, dol-
lop red-tinted icing on cupcakes, then
insert white chocolate chips point-side
down in the frosting. To p with edible
sugar butterflies ($13 for 24, Amazon.
com). Or top chocolate-iced cupcakes
with “moss” made of ground graham
crackers tinted with green food coloring.
Make even
more magic!
2
Turn fruit into sweet pops
Party pro Jennifer Jones combined
strawberries and marshmallows to cre-
ate a two-bite dessert that looks like a
mushroom! To make: Cut the stem off of
a strawberry. Then, skewer a marshmal-
low onto a lollipop stick and top with a
strawberry (pointy-side-up).
3
Wow with a “log” cake
The centerpiece of Jones’ des-
sert table was a cake that looked like
a freshly cut log. Your own fancy focal
point starts with a store-bought choco-
late cake. To make “bark” to decorate
the sides: Melt chocolate and spread
in a thin layer on wax paper. Top with
another sheet of wax paper; let harden.
Gently roll the wax paper to crush the
chocolate, then remove the top sheet of
paper. Press the chocolate against the
sides of the cake to cover the icing.
Offer up a fruit-kissed
signature cocktail
Juicy watermelon is in season right now,
making it the perfect start for a drink that’s a
little sweet, a little tart and altogether refresh-
ing. For each drink: Place slices of water-
melon into a Mason jar, then pour in 1 cup of
lemonade and 1 oz. of vodka. Add a few ice
cubes and a couple sprigs of rosemary for a
stirrer that adds a hint of herbal flavor.
Surprise them with so-pretty
paper place settings
You don’t need to spend a lot to make place
settings pop! Get creative with inexpensive
paper party supplies, like Jones did for her
woodland party. She picked up these red
flower plates in the clearance section of
a craft store, but it’s easy to turn plain red
paper plates into flowers. Simply use scis-
sors to trim the edges into scalloped shapes.
For a fun natural accent, poke a hole through
a leaf, string it on a piece of twine and wrap it
around a glass bottle.
Tempt taste buds with
a savory-sweet snack
Instead of the usual chips and pretzels,
follow the lead of Shannon Sargent
(CleanEatsAndTreats.com) and offer up a
woodland snack mix. An easy recipe: Mix
1 cup each of banana chips, raisins, dried
cranberries and apricots; set aside. In a large
bowl, beat 1 egg white until foamy; stir in 1 lb.
of unsalted nuts until coated. In a small bowl,
mix 1 Tbs. of chopped rosemary, 1^1 ⁄ 2 tsp. of
sea salt and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Stir
into nut mixture until evenly coated. Spread
over a baking sheet lined with parchment
paper and bake in a preheated 250°F oven for
30 to 45 minutes, or until crisp and dry, stirring
occasionally. Cool, then add to the fruit mix.
