MIAABOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

Overtime in hockey gains traction

ByCraigLarson
GLOBE STAFF
FRANKLIN — Dan Shineis months
away fromhis 42nd season behind the
bench for the Arlington Catholic boys’
hockey program.
But he is passionate aboutmoving
the game forward.
As the longtimechairof the MIAA’s
Ice Hockey Committee, Shine was fully
on board witha proposal fromthe
Cape Ann League to introducea two-
year pilotprogram for a 4-on-4,five-
minute overtime period to determine
regular-seasonboys’ and girls’ games
that finish regulation in a tie.
On Monday afternoon, he voiced his
full support to his colleagues on the MI-
AA’s Board of Directors, noting that the
Hockey Committee had approvedthe
proposal, 14-0.
“We already do [overtime] for holi-
day and February vacation games, to
determinewho advances in a tourna-
ment,” said Shine, who was in atten-
danceat TD Garden last March in
whichthree of the six state finals went
into OT.
“This gives kids the opportunity to
use this format in the regular season.
Right now, they can onlywork on
[overtime] situations in practice. This
will be good for the game.”
Pendingsupport from the associa-
tion’sSportsMedicineCommittee,the
proposal was approved,6-4-1. Usage

will be determined on a league/confer-
encebasis and the tie will still be re-
corded for tournament seeding.
The three-hoursession served as the
official start of a two-year term for
Marshfield Superintendent Jeff Grana-
tino as boardpresident. “The focus re-
mains on the student-athletes,” he said
in an upbeat tone.“But unfortunately,
our stakeholders have voicedconcerns.
We have to addressthose, and solve
problems.Communication and trans-
parency is important, and I am opento
new ideas and change.”
One change for the better is the final
financials for 2018-19. For the first
time in years, the MIAA realized a spike
in its tournamentrevenue,realizinga
net of $430,448.That includesa 4.5
percent decrease in expenses.
“From this seat, the myth of the as-
sociation having financial instability is
a myth,” said executivedirector Bill
Gaine whilenotingthat the association
plans to announce a $120,000 corpo-
rate sponsorship deal with its member-
ship this week.
Later, he acknowledged, “We are do-
ing better,” but the MIAA still must fill
moreseats duringthe tournaments.
This past spring, expenses ($520,198)
outnumbered revenue ($427,394), but
that was still a 10 percent improvement
from the year prior.
Non-financial numbers from the
spring: 34,718 student-athletes com-

peted on 1,078 teams, with 712 games,
and 31 events.
RThe offer fromthe state track &
field coaches (MSTCA)this past spring
to run MIAApostseasontournaments
continues to stir conversation.
“Unique”was the prevailingterm
voicedby boardmembers.“This is out-
sourcinga tournament, this is not a for-
mat change,” said Cambridge AD Tom
Arria. The consensus: followthe pro-
cess,presentto the specific sport com-
mittee, then TournamentManagement
(TMC),and the Board. “We want ideas,
but this is a process,” said Granatino.
RWith re-districting on target for
2020-21,the board tabled a motion to
rescind a proposal regarding a re-dis-
tricting subcommittee fromDistrict G
(Berkshires).
RHampton Charter, Boston Colle-
giate Charter, and SalemAcademy
were granted MIAA status.
RBarnstable(formerlyOld Colony
League) and Nauset Regional (Atlantic
Coast League), new entrants to the ex-
panded Cape& Islands League, re-
ceived exclusion status to assist in
scheduling.
RThe reformed Greater Boston
League(Everett, Malden, Medford,Re-
vere, and Somerville) were assignedto
District A.

Clemson tops ’Bama in preseason poll

ByRalphD. Russo
ASSOCIATEDPRESS
Crossoff another milestonefor
Clemson, college football’s newest su-
perpower.
For the first time, the defending na-
tional champion Tigers are No. 1 in The
Associated Press preseason Top 25 pre-
sentedby Regions Bank. The Tigers
won the program’s second national title
in three seasons behind freshman quar-
terback Trevor Lawrencein January.
Clemson now can claimequalstanding
with Alabama at the top of the sport.
The Crimson Tide,comingoff a 44-
16 loss to Clemson in the College Foot-
ball Playoff championship,are No. 2.
Clemsonreceived52 first-placevotes
and Alabama receivedthe other 10
from the media. Clemsonsnapsa re-
cord-tying string of three straight years
in which Alabama was preseason No. 1.
Georgia, Alabama’s Southeastern
Conference rival, is No. 3, followedby
No. 4 Oklahoma and No. 5 OhioState.
Clemson’s rise undercoach Dabo
Swinney has been uncommon in col-
lege football. The school won the na-
tional championship in 1981, but most-
ly it had residedon a tier below the tra-
ditionalnationalpowers. Clemson
football was usually good and some-
timesexcellent, but never this.
Last season’s championship made
Clemson just the 12th school with at
least threeAP titles since the poll start-
ed in 1936.
The Tigers enter 2019 with a 15-
game winning streak and eightstraight

double-digit victory seasons.Since
2015 , whenthey lost the national
championship gameto Alabama, the

Tigers are 55-4.
Nick Saban’s Alabama dynasty, with
five nationaltitles in a 10-yearspan,
has finally met its match. The Tide are
also 55-4 in the last four seasons.
Clemson and Alabama have split the
last four national championships,
played in the last four playoffs, and are
poised to make it five straight. This will
be the third time since 2016the Tigers
and Tide have started the season Nos. 1
and 2 in the Top 25. Beginning with
2015,whenAlabamaand Clemson oc-
cupied the top two spots in the last four
AP polls of the season, the Tide and Ti-
gers have been Nos. 1 and 2 in some or-
der 22 times.
Last year’s Clemson teamwas high-
lighted by a defensive line that had
three starters selected in the first round
of the NFL Draft.
The Tigers have rebuilding to do on
that side of the ball, but recenthistory
suggests reinforcements are ready. This
year Lawrence and the offensewill be
the headliner. The first freshmanquar-
terback in morethanthree decades to
lead a teamto a nationalchampion-
ship, Lawrence will be joined by star re-
ceivers Tee Higgins (12 touchdowns)
and Justyn Ross(nine touchdowns)
and game-breakingrunningback Trav-
is Etienne (8.1 yards per carry).
Alabama returns quarterback Tua
Tagovailoa, the HeismanTrophy run-
ner-up, and an array of weapons, too.
As a new seasonstarts, college football
fans best be prepared for Tide vs. Tigers
