Water companies
to plant 11m trees
Water companies in England have
pledged to plant 11 million new trees
by 2030 as part of efforts to deliver on
carbon-neutral ambitions.
The nine major water and sewerage
providers, including Yorkshire Water,
Anglian and United Utilities will be
planting trees on about 15,000 acres
(6,000 hectares) of land to improve the
natural environment.
Some will be planted on land owned
by the utility companies but sites will
also be provided by partners including
local authorities, the National Trust,
The Wildlife Trusts and the RSPB.
Sir William Worsley, the
Government’s tree champion,
welcomed the scheme, which is
spearheaded by Water UK, an industry
body, and urged other industries to
follow suit. “Trees are carbon sinks,
provide crucial habitats for precious
wildlife, mitigate flood risk and
provide a valuable renewable resource
in timber,” he said.
