SuRELY Downton
Abbey creator Julian
Fellowes is too modest?
The author, who turns 70
tomorrow, claims he
started out in life as an
‘undashing’ young man.
‘When I was a young man
in the ballrooms of
England that still existed,
I was a very unimportant
guest, I was there because
they were short of men.
‘When you’re at all
successful, all your gags
are funny, everyone’s
loving you and all of that
stuff. But when you go back
to before that time, that’s
how you really see how the
game is being played.’

Cate stands out

in a cloud (suit)

GENDER bending is a
trend in theatreland,
but double Oscar win-
ner Cate Blanchett is
having fun experi-
menting with her
wardrobe off stage.
The 50-year-old
opted for an outfit
made by menswear
label Triple RRR —
modelled left —
when she sported a
£790 blue cloud
jumpsuit in New
York. ‘True chic is
effortless,’ says the
mother of four. ‘I
would say my go-to is
pretty much a well-
pressed suit. Or a good
pair of trousers.’

JUDE LAW’S model
daughter Iris boasts
brains and beauty.
On holiday in Portofino
on the Italian Riviera with
her mother, Sadie Frost,
and godmother Kate
Moss, the 18-year-old
Burberry campaign star
was yesterday celebrating
her A-level results in
philosophy, English
literature and art.
Sadie shared a snap
online of Iris to mark the
occasion but coyly
declined to disclose her
grades, captioning the
image: ‘She’s all grown
up! So very proud.’
Iris admits her film star
father was the one who
inspired her to take the
highbrow route at
school. ‘My dad encour-
aged me to do philoso-
phy. I definitely get a
love of learning from
him,’ she says.

FORMER Blue Peter
presenter Janet Ellis
laughs off the idea she’s
jealous of her pop star
daughter Sophie Ellis-
Bextor. ‘I’ve certainly
been jealous of some of
the things she’s done —
everyone would like to
stand on stage and sing
— and I’ve said to
Sophie that she’s a
lucky thing.
‘But I’ve never thought
she’s having chances I
never had and wish I
was her.’

HESTON’S

CRACKERS

XMAS DISH

WACKY chef Heston Blu-
menthal has excelled him-
self — by devising a Christ-
mas dinner that can be
eaten in one mouthful.
the minuscule dish,
which will be on offer at his
triple michelin-starred Fat
duck eaterie, comprises
salmon, prawn cocktail,
turkey and stuffing.
‘Christmas is one of my
favourite times of the year,’
says Heston. ‘But I can’t
stand the traditional
Christmas dinner.’
Crackers.

GREEn & BLACK’S
chocolate co-founder Jo Fairley
was given the opportunity to
blow her own business trumpet
on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs
but she neglected to namecheck
Sarah Stacey, the co-writer of
her well-being books, which

■ include The Anti-Ageing Beauty
Bible. A chum of Sarah’s tells
me: ‘Sarah’s friends were a bit
upset Jo made out that she
wrote them on her own but then
her nickname among her staff
was always “The Empress
Josephine”.’ not so sweet, then?

pretty face:
