BRIDGE MASTERCLASS
WIN
£500
PETER DONOVAN
East-WEst are vulnerable. What should you,
as south, bid next?
BY now, it won’t be necessary to repeat what
north has promised by his redouble of west’s
take-out double, so all we have to do is consider
the situation in the light of your own cards.
Is this really a defensive hand? Clearly, the
answer is no. Do you want to leave the onus of
the next bid on north? Again, no.
So, clearly, your only alternative is to take out
2 ♣ into hearts again. But you must not make
the mistake of bidding just 2♥, announcing a
minimum hand with a six-card suit.
Bid 3♥, announcing that you are better
than minimum, with a suit that needs little
or no support from him, and would prefer to
reach a game contract for your side, despite
the vulnerability.
The chances are high that north’s promised
values will back yours, and he will almost
certainly raise you either to 4♥ or 3nT.
