MYTHICAL STEEDS

Pegasus

T

his fabled winged steed was the
offspring of the sea god Poseidon
and the gorgon Medusa. Known
for his grace and beauty, Pegasus is
closely linked to the Muses, the Greek
goddesses of the arts, and is thought to
have created the Fountain of Inspiration by
stamping his hoof on the ground.

Harness your horse power
To attract good fortune, draw a horse shoe on a piece
of paper and in the middle write down your wish, then
leave beneath your front or back door mat.

Sleipnir

T

he Norse God Odin would ride through the skies on this
eight-legged beauty. Grey in colour, Sleipnir was said to be
the best of all the horses in the world.

Harness your horse power
For success in any venture,
trace over a fi gure of eight,
eight times continuously while
saying, ‘By the power of eight,
success is my fate.’

MISTRESS OF THE HORSE

T

hese magical ladies embraced horse power to
make their mark on the world. Follow in their
footsteps (or hoof prints)!

Epona

This Celtic mother goddess is also a horse deity;
her name means ‘Little Mare’ in Gaulish. A popular
ally of the Roman Cavalry, shrines were created in
stables, as a way of petitioning her power. A
protector of horses and riders, Epona is also
associated with fertility.

Rhiannon

This beautiful Welsh goddess,
also known as the Queen of the
Fairies, is often depicted riding a
white horse. A symbol of
forgiveness and transformation,
Rhiannon was wrongly convicted
of killing her son. As punishment,
she was made to carry visitors
up to the castle gates on her
back like a horse. In the end the
truth came out and Rhiannon
was spared, but her association with the horse
continued, with some even believing she could
shapeshift into a steed.

Lady Godiva

She may not be a goddess in
the spiritual sense, but Lady
Godiva has a place amongst
the stealthiest horse maidens.
Countess of Mercia, she rode
naked through the streets of
Coventry on her horse, in a bid
to lower taxes for the poor.
Historians may quibble over
the truth of this story, but
Godiva is still linked to ancient
horse deities because of her feisty
spirit and sense of freedom!

Harness your horse power
Let the horse take the reins when it comes to
fi nding new love with this easy visualisation. Find a
quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed. Close
your eyes and take slow deep breaths. Imagine
you’re sitting on a gorgeous white stallion, on a
stretch of isolated beach. Gently the horse begins
to move, trotting along the water’s edge. You can
feel the breeze in your hair and the sun on your
skin. You know that the horse is leading you to
your perfect partner. Eventually you stop, and in
the distance see someone walking towards you. As
you meet, you’re drawn into their arms for a warm
embrace. Repeat every night for a week, then wait
for your soul mate to ride into your life!
