Dear Jackie

A

n elderly stag, whom I have named
Charles, has been visiting me for the
past two years. I would love to hear what
he has to say.
Yvonne, Buckingham

Dear Yvonne

Charles tells me that he is not a solitary
deer – there about 20 in his herd nearby.
He comes through a gap in the hedge, and
he watched you for a while before coming
forward. He says you have shown him that
it’s his choice to become human friendly
and he has never felt intimidated by you.
He says usually humans are to run from,
but not you.
He shows me getting food by some bird
feeders complete with what looks like
squirrels spinning something?
He is mature in age but declares that
he does not ‘hobble’ and can still canter.
Good for him!
He rubs his neck to put his scent on the
trees and shows me badgers and foxes –
it’s a peaceful haven for all wildlife.
He is making me aware of a problem

t last, there are now
biodegradable poop
bags! Please choose to
use them so when you’re
cleaning up after your dog
or cat, you’re doing your
bit to help and protect, not
damage, the environment.

Yvonne says:

Charles does belong to a group
of about 20 deer, and yes there
are badgers and foxes here too.
He is very special, and I am so
grateful to him for trusting me. He
doesn’t ‘hobble’ but two years ago
he used to! I have been feeding
him homeopathic tablets in bits
of apple and he now does canter
about well. How funny he notices
what the squirrels get up to: they
spin the birdfeeders to make the
food fly out and then get it off the
ground. Naughty but clever and
amusing too!
He used to have a tooth that
stuck out of the right-hand side of
his mouth, but it has now gone.
I often spot him watching me
from a distance, so sweet. One of
my visitors brings their black dog
who fortunately is well behaved
and does not want to chase
Charles off.
I am honoured by his trust and it
has been a joy to hear from him.

C

hoose your cat flea collar
carefully – some stores sell
types which contain the chemical
permethrin. To some cats, even
small quantities of permethrin can
cause severe and fatal poisoning. If
they do react to it, signs of toxicity
usually develop within
a few hours, but in some
cases can take one to
three days to become
apparent. Read the label
and avoid – there
are plenty of safe
alternatives that
use more natural
ingredients.

if he is grazing
further away and
also shows a small
black dog running
about. He is so grateful for
your caring ways and gentle
strokes – you have created such
a beautiful trusting bond.
