DRAGONS’ DEN
Sunday, 8pm BBC2 Factual

As Dragons’ Den returns, meet

the show’s youngest-ever

investor Sara Davies...

Enter the

Dragon

W

hen it began
in 2005, Sara
Davies used
to watch Dragons’
Den with her fellow
students at the
University of York.
Now, as the BBC
show returns for its
17th series, she’s
made it to the other
side of the camera.
‘The other students
said, “You’d make a
great Dragon,”’ says
Sara. ‘I laughed it off
but I did aspire to be
on the show. Then,
last year, a friend sent
me a text saying he’d
phoned Dragons’ Den
and that they wanted
to see me!’

Willpower
It was also at university
where, in her bedroom,
Sara started her
business, Crafter’s
Companion. By the
time she graduated
a year later, the
entrepreneur was well
on the way to earning
her first million!
The company,
which sells craft

supplies, now exports
to 40 countries,
employs 190 people
and has an annual
turnover of £34 million.
At 35, Sara is the
show’s youngest-ever
investor. She joins
Deborah Meaden,
Peter Jones, Touker
Suleyman and Tej
Lalvani as yet more
budding tycoons pitch
for investment in their
businesses. But was
she nervous about
joining the panel?
‘I’ve criticised the
Dragons in the past,
but it’s one thing to
watch at home and
another to sit in that
chair,’ says Sara. ‘I had
some self-doubt but
the thing is not to take
anything personally.’ Q

T

he decisions made by
three women to keep
their lives afloat have
major repercussions for
those around them – and
each other – in new ITV
drama Deep Water.
The six-parter, set near
Lake Windermere, follows
mums Lisa Kallisto, Roz
Toovey (Little Boy Blue’s
Sinead Keenan) and Kate
Riverty (Rellik’s Rosalind Eleazar),
whose lives become intertwined after
meeting at the school gates.

Hectic home life
Chaotic and disorganised, mum-of-
three Lisa is juggling a hectic home
life and running her busy dog-kennel
business. ‘Lisa spends her days going
between school runs and walking
people’s dogs,’ reveals Marcella’s
Anna Friel, who plays her.
‘She doesn’t have much time for
herself and hasn’t had a haircut in
about 10 years. Lisa and her husband,
Joe, a taxi driver, are like passing
ships in the night. She’s starting to
get a bit bored with life.’
Physiotherapist Roz is struggling
with gambling debts run up by her
soulmate, Winston. With bailiffs at
the door, Roz needs a solution to her

financial crisis and fast. Could a wealthy
client answer all her problems?
By contrast, Kate seems to have
it all – stylish clothes, a big house,
wonderful children and an amazing
husband, Guy. However, is Kate’s
supposedly charmed life all it’s
cracked up to be?
‘I’m sure that Lisa looks up to Kate,
but what is she actually looking up
to?’ wonders Anna. ‘This drama
explores what’s really going on
behind closed doors...’
Filming Deep Water in the Lake
District allowed Anna to spend some
quality time with her dog, Maggie May.
‘After a day’s filming, I’d get my wellies
on and take Maggie May up to the
mountains and walk,’ she reveals.
‘It’s really accessible and so
peaceful. I did a yoga class in the
woods, too, which was amazing!’ Q

Anna Friel stars in an emotional new drama

that proves no one ever truly knows what
