HWM Singapore – August 2019

(Sean Pound) #1
SHOWCASE

As it turns out, not everyone
who has a couple of millions
to splash on cars wants a sporty
car with poor ground clearance, a
rock hard ride, and zero boot space.
Some of these people simply want
to waft about in something nice
and practical, but preferably still
quick. A plausible solution is the new
McLaren GT.
As its name suggests, it’s a Grand
Tourer. And it’s more a competitor
to the Ferrari Porto no than the F8
Tributo. Though it looks sporty, it’s
actually quite practical. You still have
a small boot up front in the nose
that’s good for one or two weekend
bags, but you now also have a rear
luggage space above the engine
that can even accommodate a full-
size golf bag. At long last, owners
no longer have to resort to the
ignominy of taking their Bentleys to
the golf club.
Even though it’s the cushiest
McLaren yet, performance is
still brisk. The GT is powered by
McLaren’s familiar 4-liter V8 and it
puts out a mighty 612hp. 0-100km/h
happens in just 3.2 seconds and
0-200km/h in just 9 seconds. Top
speed is 326km/h. Incidentally,
it’s worth pointing out that these
 gures trump the Ferrari Porto no’s.
Coincidence? I don’t think so. In
short, for all of its practicalities, the
GT won’t leave you embarrassed at
the lights.
