With LATAM Airlines Brazil launching new weekly
lights to the Falklands from São Paulo, the islands
are set to be easier than ever to visit. The new
Falklands-Brazil route will be launched from early
November, with one light a month stopping in
Cordoba, Argentina. As the second South
America air link to the island (there is already
a weekly light from Chile), the once cut-o
community is now even easer to reach, giving
visitors the chance to see orca-illed seas,
elephant seal colonies and squawking penguins.
While we wait for Cairo’s Grand Egyptian Museum to fully ling open
its doors in 2020, there are other ‘new’ ancient wonders to explore,
as Dahshur’s ‘Bent Pyramid’ inally opens to the public. Originally
built in the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu, the 4,600-year-old pyramid
was irst excavated in 1956 but closed for restoration shortly after.
Now, visitors are able to descend its narrow tunnels to reach two
hidden chambers where a collection of sarcophagi (and even a few
mummies) were excavated, as well as visit a never-previously-
accessed side pyramid. This structure is especially rare in that it
has retained much of its polished
limestone coating, but the
101m-high point tapers o
at the top, hence its
‘bent’ nickname.
