He’s rocked by the death

of an Army friend

S

ecrets and lies have
surrounded Callum’s
time in the Army. Last
year, he gave Whitney
and the Carters a half-truth about
how he got his shrapnel injury.
And more recently, of course, he
fibbed to his doctor that he was
still racked with pain, to avoid
going back on duty – a decision
that was way more agonising
than any war wound.
Could his emotional reaction
to the death of a fellow serviceman
this week finally shed light on

why Callum gave up the career
that he clearly loved?
The soldier in question is
called Chris, and Callum finds
out about the tragedy when the
lad’s sister, Vicky, tracks him
down and breaks the sad news.
‘Callum is in utter shock,’
reveals our Walford mole, ‘and
it takes some time for him to
process what Vicky is saying. As
the news sinks in, he’s devastated.
‘Vicky explains that there’s
going to be a memorial service
for her brother the following day,
and encourages Callum to come
along and pay his respects.’
As the pair say an emotional
goodbye, Whitney spots the
exchange from afar, and she
wonders what’s going on. She
has been confused lately by her
fiancé’s lacklustre attitude to their
forthcoming wedding – unaware
that Callum’s grappling with his
sexuality and that he recently had
a gay fling with Ben.
Seeing him in the arms of
another woman sets alarm bells
ringing in her head.
The following day, Callum
struggles to focus on his job at
the funeral parlour, and leaves,

unannounced, to attend the
memorial. But once there, he’s
overwhelmed by grief, and
quickly heads home.
Back in the Square, as he
tries to gather himself together,
Whitney confronts him and
demands to know if he’s having
an affair. Callum insists he’s not,
and eventually reveals that his
friend has died.
Whit’s full of sympathy for
her partner and, as she tries to
support him, Callum decides he
must go back to the memorial.
He’s deeply troubled, and it’s
fairly obvious that Whit isn’t
getting the full story – after all, if
Chris was such a good pal, why has
Callum never mentioned him?
Could he and his fallen
comrade have been more than
just good friends?
