Sacred Wonders
● FACTUAL / 9pm / BBC1
Heat tests the endurance of the faithful
this week. In Mali, the unique Great
Mosque of Djenné, the largest mud-built
structure in the world, is in constant
danger of collapse. Every year, before the
wet season, the community has just one
day to replaster the walls in mud. It’s hot
work, as temperatures reach 4 0°C, but
worth the effort as anyone involved in its

repair has an easier path to paradise.
Meanwhile, in Japan, the landscape is
sacred, and in order to keep the spirits
happy, 12 torchbearers holding gigantic
flaming torches – weighing a massive
8st – have to purify a path the spirits
will travel on their way to the Nachi Falls,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A miracle
of man and nature. ★★★★ FW

Interior Design Masters
● REALITY / 8pm / BBC2

NEW

From Changing Rooms to
Homes Under the Hammer,
there’s no denying the joy of the ‘before’
and ‘after’ of a makeover show. Blend in
some Bake Off kindness and a dash of The
Apprentice competitiveness, and you’re on
to a winner. Tonight, 10 wannabe interior
designers decorate two show homes, and

soon wallpaper isn’t the only thing
clashing! Will judge Michelle Ogundehin
be as wowed as presenter Fearne Cotton
by pink arches, a black bedroom and wood
panelling? A colourful sample of spectator
TV designed to brighten up rooms all over
the country! ★★★★ ER

UEFA Super Cup
● FOOTBALL / 7pm / BT Sport 2

LIVE

For the first time in this competition, two
English sides will compete for the trophy,
playing in Istanbul’s Vodafone Park (k-o 8pm). Liverpool
were the last Premier League team to win this cup in
2005, and their new captain, Virgil van Dijk, will be
looking to add this to his collection. Chelsea have also
won it, but that was back in 1 99 8, having lost in 2012
and then in 2013, too. Can Frank Lampard, their new
manager, concoct a way to beat the Reds? ★★★★ NP
