Double Indemnity
● FILM / 6.45pm / TCM
Brilliantly written, cleverly directed and played perfectly
by Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G
Robinson – three reasons why this 1 944 film noir is still
must-watch material 75 years on. Fred’s the wiseguy
insurance agent who isn’t as smart as he thinks he is,
Barbara is the blonde persuading him to kill her husband
for the insurance and Edward G Robinson is the office
fuddy-duddy neither of them reckoned on. ★★★★★ SM

Hold the Sunset
● COMEDY / 9pm / BBC1
Phil and Edith are excited – but trying to play it cool –
because Jack Dugdale (Peter Egan) might be interested
in buying Phil’s house. But will Roger and Bob (James
Cosmo), searching for dry rot in Phil’s loft, put a spanner
in the works? Meanwhile, as Jack and Sandra start to
bond, Wendy struggles to find a theme for the children’s
book she’s writing, until one of Sir David Attenborough’s
wildlife shows provides her with inspiration... ★★★ CC

Bob is riding high
after Cabaret but
Gwen is struggling
● DRAMA / 9pm / BBC2
This compelling drama about
the careers of Bob Fosse and
Gwen Verdon veers into A Star
Is Born territory this week,
with Bob in demand after the
huge success of Cabaret. He
throws himself into rehearsals
for Broadway musical Pippin,
while Gwen is required to
audition for a part in a new
play. She’s desperate for Bob to
use his influence to improve
the shaky production, but he’s
too busy having the time of his
life with drugs and girls. And
there’s an utterly devastating
scene when Gwen’s terminally
ill friend Joan hits a very raw
nerve about Gwen’s parenting.
If you were in any doubt already,
this episode makes it clear
why Michelle Williams is
tipped to win her first Emmy
award for her portrayal of
Gwen. ★★★★^ JP
