Military Illustrated Modeller – August 2019

(Ann) #1
AFV Edition

The periscopes and optics were first carefully brush-painted with
silver from Mr Hobby and then received a clear green colour from AK.
The result is quite realistic, as seen here on the range finder

The lower hull received a generous amount of various earth-coloured
pigments. These were permanently fixed in place with pigment fixer.
The next day you can create more tonal variation with additional
earth coloured washes. With a hairdryer you can easily accelerate the
drying process to see the achieved result even sooner

The running gear received a similar treatment and the rims were polished
with metal powder

The metal tracks from Friulmodel were undercoated first with an acrylic
primer from AK Interactive and were then topped with Tamiya XF-52
Flat Earth, followed by a misty overcoat of X-1 Gloss Black. Then a
liberal amount of earth coloured pigments followed. With this type of
running gear, the contact area between tracks and road wheels will be
bare polished metal due to the constant friction. To imitate this effect,
the author rubbed on metal pigments

The spare track links received additional rust tones

Additional dry pigments were applied to the running gear More earth tones were applied using a special mixture from AK, because the author felt the road wheels
could still benefit from some additional effects

With various oil paints, the author added all kinds of streaking effects, oil and grease stains and additional
rust effects. This step will add a lot of character to your model and is a very satisfying task

The contact points on the outer surface of the tracks will also be
polished. Since the author used the white metal tracks from Friulmodel,
they were simply sanded on their outer surfaces with a sanding stick.
The tips of the guide horns were sanded carefully too

With different earth and dust coloured pigment, the tracks received their
final touch-ups, trying to keep the effect random and not too monotone
