Grand prix racing answers the naysayers
Oh where art thou, wise sages of motor racing, those who
lamented the demise of Formula 1 after the marathon
of boredom that was France? We then had Austria.
Then Britain. Now Germany. To quote Mark Twain,
“The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated”.
Graeme Innes-Johnstone

Formula 1 reigns when it rains
The German Grand Prix: superb! Having been a watcher/
marshal for 50-plus years, this was the best Formula 1
race for many years!
Let’s hope that it rains at each race for the rest of
the season. It certainly makes a change to the boring,
processional races that we have been subjected to.
And so good to see a different face on the podium;
good luck in the future to the so-called underdogs!

Memories of fun in a Ford Capri
I enjoyed the feature on the 50th anniversary of the Ford Capri
(25 July), especially the piece on the Slick 50/Road Saloons, as
I remember turning up at Snetterton in my three-litre Capri,
with Tim Dodwell in his VW Scirocco (which he still has), in
the very first race – and it’s true, it was fun racing.

W Series needs a splash of colour
Your photograph on page 38 last week has pushed me
to write concerning the on-going difficulty with ‘driver
identity’ in W Series.
In Formula 1 and other single-seater series fans get
used to instantly associating particular liveries/colours with
certain drivers. The current car-swap in W Series renders
this impossible even though drivers’ names are writ large.

For next season the organisers should introduce more
‘base’ colours for greater variety and nominate a colour
to each driver for the whole season. The drivers can still
swap chassis at each race, but simply take ‘their’ set of
body panels with them as they switch mounts.
This move would allow each driver to create her
own brand identity and make watching races more
accessible and enjoyable.

F1’s eggs-istential problem
In response to Brian McCausland’s suggestion (Letters,
25 July), could I ask whether the chicken egg should be
white or brown, and what the class size of the egg should
be? This is F1 after all, and if it isn’t specified, someone
will start breeding ever-smaller chickens with ever-
smaller eggs to minimise the risk of breakage!
