Escaped Q1 for
the first time in
2019, although
he burned up
three sets of softs to
do it. Didn’t make
much of an impression
for much of the race as
tyre gambles went
wrong before the team
called him in for slicks
at the perfect time. By
his own admission, a
mistake cost him a
place to Kvyat.

Ran the upgrade
on Friday but
had to have a
chassis change
overnight. Qualified
well, just over a tenth
behind Russell and
in the race got ahead
of his team-mate by
making the final
switch to slicks slightly
earlier. His reward
was, after the Alfas
were penalised, a
first point since 2010.

Again showed
himself to be as
quick, if not
fractionally
quicker, than his team-
mate. But also showed
he doesn’t always
string together clean
races, slipping back
on the first lap after an
off. Thereafter, did a
good job and deserved
the eighth place he
subsequently lost to
a clutch penalty.

Despite the
distraction of
awaiting his first
child (who duly
arrived the night
before the race), he
qualified the Toro
Rosso about where it
should have been and
drove into points
contention. Inspired
early call for slicks fired
him to the front and
his pass on Stroll gave
him a famous podium.

Revelled in
the upgraded
Racing Point
and returned
to Q3 after a six-race
absence with a
strong performance,
bagging eighth place.
But his race was a
disappointment,
losing three places
early on then spinning
into the inside wall
out of Turn 10 on
lap two.

Once again was
the quicker
Williams driver.
Had the
advantage over
Kubica for much of
the race, but Williams
disagreed with his
desire to take slicks
under the final safety
car, which could
have earned him
the lead, and he
was subsequently
undercut by Kubica.

Looked quick all
weekend and
made good on
that promise
with fifth in qualifying.
Converted that to third
at the start and drove
an excellent race on
what might be called
the orthodox strategy
to take seventh on the
road, often holding off
faster cars. Post-race
penalty cost him what
was a good result.

Qualifying
was ruined
by a traffic
jam that
compromised his lap,
along with Norris
being slow in Turn 6.
On his first experience
of an F1 car in the wet,
he drove an excellent
race, getting himself
into the points from a
lowly starting position
and spending much of
the race in the top six.
