Grimes across the line in what was initially
a close-fought Ginetta Junior race. It all
ended with red flags flying after two of the
main protagonists, Sean McGovern and
Matthew Nicholl, tangled on the exit
to the Chicane, an encounter that
resulted in McGovern’s car lying
wrong-side-up on the back straight.
The combined affair for Mazda MX-5s
and Fiesta Zetecs ended with Robert
Kennedy leading Eorann O’Neill past the
defeated for the first time this season
in a race shortened to 11 minutes after
leader Joe Russell’s heavy off at the
Esses brought about a red flag.
There were huge amounts of spray, but
Blackman had other reasons for not being
able to pass the similar Vauxhall Tigra
clone of Chris Brockhurst.
“The windscreen steamed up and
I couldn’t see, so I was just chasing
after Chris’s rain light,” he explained.
Steve Burrows charged from row five
to challenge the two leaders, but slithered
off on the penultimate lap.
Paul Roddison won the first of the MaX5
Championship races after coming through
from fourth on the grid, but in the
second he started at the back after
being the only driver to complete
a second green flag lap.
Having climbed into contention, a
spin at Gerard’s Bend dropped him way
out of it, allowing Ian Loversidge to
break Roddison’s 2019 dominance.
Joshua Potter bookended his day with
wins in the first and third Citroen C1
races, and thought he had snatched the
race two win as well, but Stephen James’
spin out of the lead came on the slowing
down lap – although neither driver
realised it at the time.
IAN SOWMAN
chequered flag by almost 5s, with series
instigator David Cousins third. The Stewart
brothers, Mark and Paul, topped the Fiesta
train, with Megan Campbell in a feisty third.
The Toyota Celica of Gareth Thompson
was dominant among the ‘Super’ section of
the Mondello-based Future Classics affair,
while Patrick Howley (Rover 25) led Gary
Duggan’s Fiat Punto home among the
not-so-super versions.
