FINISHING STRAIGHT

FROM THE ARCHIVE
Pietro Bordino (Fiat 804) stops for fuel
and new spark plugs during the 1922
French Grand Prix, run on the 8.31-mile
Strasbourg circuit. Bordino traded the

lead with the Fiat of Felice Nazzaro during
the 60-lap race, and the Italian company
was looking good for a 1-2-3 headed by
Bordino when Biagio Nazzaro (Felice’s
nephew) crashed and was killed after he

shed a rear wheel. Bordino then suffered
a similar issue (all three Fiats’ rear axle
casings were later found to be faulty),
but he was able to bring the car to a halt.
Felice Nazzaro’s victory was hollow.
