Here in Cape Town the norm is never to
use indicators, never to stop at stop
streets and to tailgate the driver ahead of
you. And why? You never see these bad
drivers being caught, so lawlessness on
the roads prevails.

book Long Walk to Freedom. What a
lovely surprise.

walk away. This habit is dreadful for
the environment but so typical of many

Recycling conundrums
I totally agree with Puzzled (YOU Say,
25 July) regarding your article on re-
cycling (YOU, 11 July).
We’re constantly urged to recycle
our plastic to avoid it landing up in the
oceans and decimating marine life.
But now the article reveals that de-
spite the triangular recycling logo on
plastics we shouldn’t take that to
mean the item is in fact recyclable!
To further muddy the waters we’re
told not to mix soft plastics with hard
plastics as the soft plastics are flimsy
and clog up sorting equipment.
So are we now to believe we must
take only the hard plastic to the recy-
cling drop-off point and throw the rest
away with the normal trash? It’s all
very confusing.
I also agree with Puzzled that it’s
impossible to remove labels.

SThis is a handy tip to remove labels.
Break the surface of the label – most
today have a hard shiny surface. Apply
a drop of oil – I use cooking oil but any
type will do. Then leave it to soak well.
I usually leave it overnight.
You’ ll find it easy now to remove the
label as the oil ruins whatever type of
glue or adhesive has been used. Now
you can just clean off the residue with
some sort of spirit using tissue or pa-
per towel.
This works for me every time.
