AccordingtoElizabeth
Arden,onlya thirdofwomen
between the ages of 30 and 59 usea neckorchest
treatment, yet the skininthisareais thinnerthan
the skin on your faceandlosesfirmnesswithage.
A recent survey by Mintelfoundthat32%ofUK
women are concernedaboutthelookoftheir
neck, rising to 44%ofwomenaged 55 andover.
According to NathalieBroussard,Shiseido’s
scientific communicationdirector:“Theneck
doesn’t produce as muchsebumastheface,
making the skin pronetodryness.It’salso
exposed to constantmovementand,unlikefacial
skin, the neck doesnotadheredirectlyto
subcutaneous tissueormuscles.Therefore,asit
loosens, lines increaseinnumberandbecome
deeper and broader.”
Dermatologists pointoutthat,inaddition,we
often forget to applySPFbelowthechin.“The
precautions we taketoprotectandcorrectonthe
face aren’t necessarilyashabitualontheneckand
chest,” explains Dr HowardMurad,dermatologist
and founder of Muradskincare.“Andtheseareas
are actually more exposedtoenvironmental
factors than other areasofthebody.Thisleadsto
visible signs of ageing.”
Brits, on average,alsolookdowntocheck

in so-called “tech neck”– increasedhorizontal
lines and sagging.
With this in mind,theriseinproducts
formulated for the neckis nosurprise.Butwhydo
we need a targeted treatmentforthisarea?
“While there is crossoverwithfaceandbody
treatments,” says DrMurad,“formulationsthat
focus on retexturisingthesurface,replumping
the skin barrier andfirmingcanspecifically
address the needs oftheneckandchestareas.”
