Classic American – September 2019

(lily) #1
Despite all that fanfare, Comet production was down by
almost 25,000 cars for 1965 to 165,065, which was due, no
doubt, to sales stolen by the Mustang.
Total Comet 404 production was 36,346, with just 10,905
of those being two-door sedans like Dave’s, making his one of
the rarest of the non-Cyclone 65 Comets. Base 202s were the
biggest sellers, followed by the Calientes.Yetwithincreased
demand for its all-new full-sized cars, Mercuryhit arecord for
model-year production.
Purchase price for our feature car before options would
have been $2241. It was built at the Metuchen, New Jersey,
plant on September 25 and it stayed local throughout its life
in America. The first owner kept it until some time in March
1967 when, with 26,000 miles on the clock, it was bought at
Grecco Lincoln-MercuryatRockaway,New Jersey,for $1440
by second owner Michael Bucci. He still owned the car in
September 1984 when it went to HenryTroast Auto Finishing
of Rockaway for $325 of paint and body repairs. It was later
advertised in Hemmings, presumably by its third owner, and
has had three previous UK owners before Dave.
