Classic American – September 2019

(lily) #1

The C3 has since gone on to winanumber of

awards, which has only whetted Jeff’s already

deeply rooted passion for Corvettes. Although

he loves his C3 to bits, the desire to perhaps

one day purchaseaC2‘mid-year’ Corvette, was

getting ever stronger. While surfing the net one

day,hecameacros sa1967 C2 Sting Ray Coupe

for sale in the USA. He tookanote of the car and

could not help but look at the ad again over the

next few days.

This C2 featureda427cu in engine,

Powerglide automatic transmission, black leather

trim, Kelsey Hayes bolt-on alloy wheels, the rare

California dealer style option of six rear lights and

was finished in SunfireYellow.“Everything that I

could ever have wished for onaC2,” he beams!

“I wasn’texactly inaposition to purchase the car

outright immediately,but that didn’tstopme

from contacting the vendor, who turned out to

be one of the nicest Corvette sellers thatIhave

ever spoken to. JohnYoung had been given the

car by his late fatherMLYoung (NCRS member

16) after he had sadly lost his sightafew years

previously.‘ML’, as he was known in the NCRS

fraternity, had owned the car since 1971 and it

had gone on to becomeamulti-award winning

‘Top Flight’ car aroundadozen times.”

With his heart now racing and definitely

having ‘buyer’seyes’,somehow Jeff managed

to sellafew cars and was veryclose to the total

aski ng price, but then thought that he’d better

get the car checked over first, even though

he’d virtually already paid for it. Fortunately,

the exhaustive pre-inspection report returned

veryfavourably,other thanafew minor issues.

“Thiswas themost expensive car that I’d ever

purchased from the USA, atatime of the worst

exchange rates too,” Jeff winces. “The car

eventually arrived at Southampton andIwas

luck yinbidding for the appropriate registration

plate of VET67E. In September 2017Ientered

both of my Corvettes for UK NCRS Flight judging

at thei revent in Kent.Iwas delighted to receive a

2nd FlightAwardfor both of them.Ibelieve that

the 1971 C3 is veryclose toaTop FlightAward,

but the 1967 C2 will remaina2nd Flight due to

its non-original air conditioning system.”
