to wear on the moon. We tell
you about alien-like animals,
conspiracy theories, and people
who endure extremes no human
should survive. We trek to the
deepest depths of our oceans
and travel back in time to visit
ancient civilizations. We check
in with far-flung scientists and
learn how to use Martian dirt to
make houses on the Red Planet.
This magazine celebrates
the most popular science: the
science of the unknown. We’ve
had an absolute blast (get it?)
making it, and we’re pumped
to share it with you. And to an-
swer the question I know you’re
about to ask, yes, we’ve got your
UFOs. Because even though we
can’t prove the existence of ex-
traterrestrial life (here come the
letters; I’m ready), we can’t dis-
prove it either.
I personally hope we never do.

I’LL BE REAL HONEST WITH
you; we cooked up this issue as
an excuse to talk about UFOs.
Here are some names we consid-
ered: The UFO Issue. Invasions.
Aliens. Weird Science.
We soon hit some snags.
Or one big snag, really. PopSci
writes about things that exist,
and it got really clear really quick
that we couldn’t fill 100 pages
with verifiable stories of uniden-
tified flying objects and alien
incursions. We drifted toward In-
vasions, but that quickly skewed
biological and pushed out a lot of
the cool space stuff we wanted to
cover. Aliens gave us the same
problem (ironic!), and Weird Sci-
ence seemed too judgmental.
Eventually, we settled on
what you have in front of you:
Out There. And whoa, was that
ever a good choice.
Keep reading, and you’ll
soon be gobbling up tales from
the fringes of what humans can
know, reach, and do. We serve
up stories of rockets, far- seeing
scopes, new landmasses on
Earth, and a watch tough enough
