3 ways to... Protect yourself

from identity fraud

Managing money
for the first time
can be daunting

1 Be careful

with paperwork
Always shred paperwork that
contains your name, address or
financial details before throwing
it out. Check your statements
carefully and if you’re expecting a
bank or credit card statement and
it doesn’t arrive, tell your bank or
credit card company.

2 Online risks
Be wary about sharing personal
details online. Fraudsters can piece
together information held on sites
like Facebook and LinkedIn,
and use this to

steal your identity. The report
found personal details obtained
this way are often used to apply for
payday loans and mobile phone
contracts. And remember to make
sure your settings are private.

3 Alarm bells
If you receive an unsolicited email
or phone call from what appears
to be your bank or building society
asking for your security details,
never reveal your full password,
login details or account numbers.
If you’re worried, wait for five
minutes and call your bank from
a different telephone, making sure
there is a dialling tone.

Identity fraud has reached a record high in the UK,
according national fraud protection service Cifas.
So it’s essential to do all you can to avoid falling victim

HAVE YOU HEARD?
Overcharging loyal customers
could be banned under new
Government proposals. The so-called
‘loyalty penalty’, where existing
customers see their insurance premiums
or mobile contracts increase in price or are
charged more than new customers, costs
consumers a staggering £4.1 billion a year.
The plan is to give the competition
watchdog power to fine firms that
overcharge or mislead their customers.
