it. “I’ll be watching my grandchildren play
outside, and then the imagery will begin to
form. This leads to a bit of digging, through
a variety of mediums, to better understand
the scene in my head. I will look through
a hodgepodge of photos and videos of the
animals in question. Photographs will often
illustrate muscles and how the limbs of the
creature will stretch and interact in life. This
leads to the work itself. Gradually bringing to
life a creature via bits of graphite and acrylic
paint, is an indescribable feeling of creativity.”
Debra has been often asked what makes
her artwork unique, something she finds
difficult to answer. “I suppose it is because
I paint on animal hides, on the skull and
bones, which is a bit of a rarity! For me, to
see an animal painted on its corresponding
hide just has a certain amount of finality, a
fitting tribute.”
