North Yorkshire has a dreamy new
destination hotel. Sitting in rolling
countryside on the edge of the Yorkshire
Dales near Ripon, Grantley Hall was once
an English country retreat that welcomed
royalty, statesmen and socialites, but
had fallen into disrepair in recent years.
A multi-million-pound restoration project
has breathed new life into the 17th-century
Palladian-style mansion, and it now boasts
47 luxurious guest rooms, four restaurants
and a state-of-the-art spa. Visit for afternoon
tea, an elegant affair taken in the Drawing
Room to the strains of a grand piano.

The story of the V&A is closely linked to
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Albert
devised the Great Exhibition of 1851, and
many of the exhibits went on to form the
rst collection of the South Kensington
Museum, which was opened by the couple
in 1857. The museum has launched a range
of commemorative items to celebrate the
200th anniversary of Victoria and Albert’s
births, including this regal mug (£16), which
shows the romantic pair dancing surrounded
by beloved objects, such as the queen’s
sapphire and diamond coronet, on display
in the newly refurbished Jewellery Galleries.

A royal brew

American artist Dale Chihuly’s glass
creations in electric colours and convoluted
forms are instantly recognisable. His pieces
sit remarkably well alongside the lush
landscapes of Kew Gardens, where his
exhibition, Reections on Nature, is now
on display. Marvel at his stunning trail
of blue glass owers suspended from the
Temperate House roof and gigantic glass
reball by the Palm House lake. To see his
works truly dazzle, though, visit after dark:
on Chihuly Nights (Thursday to Saturday,
15 August to 26 October), these unique
forms will be lit up as the sun goes down.
